Custom Built Backyard Decking

There is a multitude of deck types, and materials available to create your ultimate outdoor oasis. Your custom design will depend on how you intend to use the space and look you want to achieve. For example, a freestanding (floating) deck built around a feature tree may be perfect for a small garden. A multi-level deck would be ideal for a slanted backyard – or to add interest to a flat backyard. Each material (wood, composite, metal) has its own unique benefits and aesthetic appeal. We can guide you through your options to help you find a balance between longevity, aesthetics, and pricing. No matter what type of deck we design together, you’re sure to enjoy countless hours of relaxation and entertainment in your new custom outdoor space.

Pun aside, our team thoroughly enjoy decking projects. Decks seamlessly tie the inside of the home to the great outdoors and can be beautifully enhanced with existing or new pergolas and patios, a pool, spa, or garden element.

Decks are ideal for increasing property appeal and value(*1-2). They bring a “wow” factor while adding a dynamic living space to the property. Timber decks, in particular, provide warmth and a cosy atmosphere. Adding a deck can make your property stand out, particularly in areas where outdoor entertaining is popular (hello Australia!). The key is to ensure that the new outdoor entertaining area complements the style of the property to ensure harmony throughout.

If you opt for timber for your pool deck, selecting the right timber is essential to ensure durability and rot resistance. Merbau (often used in construction) and Spotted Gum are both practical and look the part(*3). Softwoods such as pine are not ideal as they don’t hold up well in pool-side settings. If you’re looking for a premium option, you can’t go wrong with Jarrah, Blackbutt, or Eucalyptus hardwoods. Composite decking is also a good choice for pool decking.

Designing a deck can be an exciting project, but where do you start? First, consider the purpose of the deck and what furniture you plan to place on it. Will it be used for relaxation, outdoor cooking, or hosting social gatherings? Once you have a clear idea of the deck’s function, you can determine the space needed and the best location. For instance, if you want to extend your indoor living space (or make the house feel bigger), a deck extending out from the back door would be the best choice. Alternatively, if you want a private oasis away from the chaos of daily life, a secluded floating deck nestled in your garden with privacy screening may be perfect.

Next, review day and night elements. Colour (paint or staining) will bring the design to life during the day. At night, lighting is what will see you extending your time outside on warm summer evenings. Illuminated stairs and downlights across multiple levels sprinkle a touch of magic as the sun sets.
